Breakfast Buffet: VCU staves off suitors for its athletic director

1. In addition to signing coach Shaka Smart to a longterm contract, VCU has also apparently succeeded in fending off suitors for athletic director Norwood Teague. Miami had expressed interest in Teague this week, but the Richmond Times Dispatch reports that he agreed in principle to a new multiyear contract on Monday that will keep him at VCU.

2. Washington State unveiled new jerseys in all its sports on Monday, including men's basketball. The home whites with maroon trim are still a really classy look, but what's up with the all-gray road uniforms? Not sure I'm a fan of the white trim on the bottom of the gray shorts.

3. Whoever Miami's next coach is, he may not have the Hurricanes' best interior player back next season. Center Reggie Johnson declared for the NBA draft on Monday, though he did not hire an agent, preserving the ability to return to school. "The chance has presented itself so I can see where I stand," Johnson said. "If it doesn't feel right, I know I still have the opportunity to return to play college basketball."

4. Villanova highlights the field at next year's 76 Classic in Anaheim, but the rest of the group is less-than-inspiring to say the least. New Mexico should be improved and Washington State could be formidable if Klay Thompson and DeAngelo Casto return, butBoston College and Oklahoma will be beginning rebuilding seasons.

5. Positive news has been rare around Wake Forest basketball the past 12 months, so forgive Demon Deacons fans if they celebrate even the slightest good fortune. Top assistant Jeff Battle, Wake Forest's best recruiter, announced Monday he will remain with the program rather than accepting a similar gig at Providence.

One of FOX Sports analyst Marques Johnson's traditions is to dunk a basketball every year on his birthday. This year he decided to do something special: Spoofing Blake Griffin's infamous slam over a car from the NBA dunk contest.

"I've had numerous friends call me, countless people in that community begging me to go back home. The one thing that's unfair to the University of Miami is that all the media people, locally and nationally, are saying it's not a good job. And that's not right. But UM never called. So I have no idea. And I'm not pursuing other jobs. I've never chased a job in my life." ? Kansas State coach Frank Martin on Miami's surprising lack of interest in him. (The Associated Press)
