There Is Something Different About the New UFC Light Heavyweight Champion

On March 19, at UFC 128, Jon "Bones" Jones became the UFC Light Heavyweight champion by defeating Maurcio "Shogun" Rua. This would mark the sixth time in four years the Light Heavyweight belt has been wrapped around a different fighter.

My last article was about the Rua and the inconsistencies with the dominance of the Light Heavyweight champions. At UFC 128, I saw something different.

True, the title changed hands again. And true, the questions will start arising about champion dominance, once again. But the way Jones handled Rua so easily was not only impressive, but it showed that the young 23-year-old does have that "WOW" factor about him.

Jones' unorthodox fighting style was too much for Rua. And it looks like that same style will be too much for anybody right now. Rua is one of the best fighters to enter the octagon, and for Jones to dominate him effortlessly is unreal. Not only did we see Jones's great wrestling ability, we saw very impressive Muay Thai from Jones.

He is young and driven. Those traits is going to make this guy one of the best fighters ever. He is that good. When Jones starts to learn the game of MMA and combine that with his raw talent, he may well be one of the best ever to step into the MMA world. Right now he is still learning and running on raw talent. But every fight he shows us something different.

Right now, it is hard to look at the talented and deep Light Heavyweight Division and select a fighter that can stylistically match up with Jones. And people were saying that former champion Lyoto Machida was hard to figure out. Jones is on another level. He has yet to be fully tested in the octagon, and he is just going to get better.

Right now, Jon Jones is a scary fighter. But think about how much scarier the guy will be when he starts to get the hang of the MMA game. We may just see a long dominant run by this champion because of that.
