NFL Draft 2011: Baltimore Ravens Looking Closely at Quarterback Ricky Stanzi

Would Selecting Ricky Stanzi in NFL Draft Be Smart Move for Baltimore Ravens?

The Baltimore Ravens do not need a quarterback, as they have Joe Flacco starting for them. It does help to have insurance at the spot, but it's not a pressing need.

Despite that, the Ravens have decided to take a close look at quarterback Ricky Stanzi out of Iowa. Originally projected to be a third or fourth-round pick, his stock has fallen after a poor combine and he could likely be selected rather late in the draft.

When I first heard this, I thought this was a bad idea. Ricky Stanzi is not someone who will likely be a starter in the NFL. SI.com's Tony Pauline is especially critical of Stanzi, saying, "forget about it. As far as I'm concerned, he's a career back up."

While I did not like it at first, I actually don't think it's too bad a move the more I mull it over. The Ravens don't have anyone else under contract behind Joe Flacco, and with Marc Bulger likely looking for one more starting opportunity, he won't re-sign with Baltimore.

Besides, the backup does not have to be perfect, just serviceable, which I think Stanzi can be. He won't be someone who can carry a team, but he can play well for three games a year if needed. It's a low-risk pick and who knows, he may shock everyone and be better than Flacco.
