Texas redshirt Marquise Goodwin pursues track and field glory

When tempted by the track and field world championships and the 2012 summer Olympics, Texas junior receiver Marquise Goodwin didn't have too difficult of a choice.

Despite being a starter on the football team, Goodwin has decided to redshirt the 2011 season and concentrate on his track and field career.

"To compete in the World Championships and Olympics are dreams of mine, and I'm going to do everything I can to represent them while I'm competing for our country with Team USA," Goodwin said in a statement. "I'm still going to be around football as much as possible, supporting them every step of the way next season, and will be ready to go with two years left when I fully return."

Goodwin, an All-American, won the U.S. outdoor long jump national title last weekend, which earned him at spot at the world championships in Korea Aug. 27-Sept. 4. Goodwin would have had to spend most of the rest of the summer, including the time devoted to the Longhorns' fall camp, training for the worlds. And now that he might have a shot at the 2012 summer Olympics, he doesn't have had enough time to participate in both sports.

Goodwin started seven games for the Longhorns last year, had 31 catches for 324 yards and two touchdowns.

With Goodwin sitting out, the Longhorns have just two receivers with ample playing time at the position -- senior Malcolm Williams and sophomore Mike Davis. Sophomore Darius White has one catch for five yards in his career.

Other players who could help the receiving corps this year include, freshman Jaxon Shipley, the younger brother of former star receiver Jordan Shipley, and junior DeSean Hales, who has impressed during spring football. The other potential candidates are either freshmen or haven't played the position.
