Houston Astros: Sore Back Puts Hit Streak on Hold for Hunter Pence

Hunter Pence, currently riding a 22-game hitting streak, was held out of the lineup for the Astros on Sunday against the Atlanta Braves.

Pence, along with Astros head trainer Nate Lucero, approached manager Brad Mills and expressed concern that Pence had been experiencing pain in his back while running.

With a day game following a night game, the Astros felt it was best to give Pence the day off and prevent his back from locking up on him.

The Astros are currently in the midst of a 16-game stretch without an off-day. The move makes sense for both Pence and the Astros to prevent an injury that could cost him significant time.

During the 22-game hitting streak, Pence is hitting .391.

The Astros are going to try to prevent using Pence as a pinch hitter today to give him a complete day off. Of course, a pinch hit appearance could also jeopardize his hitting streak.

He is expected to be back in the lineup Monday night against the Braves.

Earlier this season, Andre Ethier of the Los Angeles Dodgers had a 30-game hitting streak.

Pence's streak is the longest active streak ongoing in the Major Leagues right now.
