Arsenal Transfer Rumours: Will 30 Million Spending Spree Satisfy Gunners Fans?

Arsenal Transfer Rumours See Gunners Plotting 30 Million in Transfers, But Will They Assuage Fans?

Arsenal came into this summer's transfer window looking to make a big splash. With last season's disappointing finish, the Gunners were looking to make some major changes, but through the first two weeks of transfer season, things haven't gone as planned.

The Gunners whiffed hard on Blackburn's Phil Jones, as well as midfield targets like Ashley Young (both of whom wound up at Manchester United), and weren't a factor in the race to land Sunderland starlet Jordan Henderson. In fact, the only big name the Gunners landed was that of midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the 17-year-old phenom.

The lack of big signings have made the fan base understandably irritated, as they're waiting for the big spending they've seen at other club. Fortunately, manager Arsene Wenger is prepared to try and assuage them, according to a report from Mirror Football

In fact, according to the report, Wenger is planning to drop at least 30 million to try and quiet the rumblings coming from the Gunner faithful, on at least two big-name targets. But, will it really be enough?

Frankly, the cash alone won't quiet the complaints, but perhaps the targets themselves will. Wenger's biggest name on the list is that of Bolton defender Gary Cahill, who would provide the Gunners with the solid defender they so desperately need. At 17 million, he won't come too cheaply, but he alone won't be enough.

That's where Gervinho comes in. The Ivorian striker is preparing to make a move to the Premiership from French outfit Lille, and Arsenal remain his most likely landing place. The 24-year-old striker figures to bolster what was a fairly shaky striker corps at Emirates last season, and the Gunners' could use his skill beside Robin van Persie in the front of the attack.

But, the Gunners are also still in the running for Brazilian starlet Leandro Damiao, and AIK Stockholm's burgeoning young fullback Alexander Milosevic.

Frankly, at this point, the fan base would likely settle for Gervinho and Cahill at the bare minimum, but getting all four would likely silence them completely, at least for the time being. At that point, they would have addressed the biggest needs of the squad (strikers and defenders), done so with young players, but also landing well-known names.

But, should the Gunners fail to land either Gervinho or Cahill, and are unable to find suitably high-profile replacements for them, things could get awfully hot on Arsene Wenger's chair. He needs to make a splash during this summer's transfer window, and needs to show commitment to improving the club, if he wants to keep his job beyond next season.

In the end, I do think Wenger knows what's at stake for himself at Emirates this season. He's been scouring the transfer market, and if he grabs Cahill and Gervinho, he'll be fine. But, he has to do something, or things will keep getting hotter for him. The fans are chomping at the bit to win hardware, and without at least a couple of new faces, particularly at the back on defense, I just don't see it happening. But, if he lands Cahill (and possibly Blackburn's Christopher Samba), all could well be forgiven.
