Many mock drafts have the Giants drafting a defensive lineman with their first pick. However, the holes in their linebacking corps and offensive line are substantially larger and must be addressed before drafting a defensive tackle.
The Giants should take a linebacker in the first round. Keith Bulluck didn't live up to his expectations last year while no one stepped up on the outside.
They also need to address some serious question marks in their offensive line. Simply put, their offensive line is old and they have to start drafting players that could possibly see playing time in the upcoming season.
I don't understand the argument that drafting a defensive tackle before these issues are addressed would benefit the Giants.
They have three studs at defensive end in Jason Pierre-Paul, Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora. In the middle, they have two solid players in Chris Canty and Linval "the Anvil" Joseph.
With the possibility of Barry Cofield not returning as a Giant, there is really no question that the Giants should draft one or two defensive tackles. However, with Cofield and Joseph as starters, the most immediate action that two possible rookies will see is subbing in for fatigued first-stringers.
Conversely, the Giants need immediate upgrades in the linebacking corps and offensive line. Using a higher pick in the draft on a linebacker and an offensive lineman, the better they will be and the quicker the Giants will be able to groom him into a starter.
The Giants need potential starters at linebacker and offensive line, which means they should draft a player for both early on in the draft.
