Daisuke Matsuzaka Injury Update: Boston Red Sox Pitcher Not Having Tommy John

Pedroia's collapse wasn't the only injury scare the Boston Red Sox struggled with yesterday.

In his afternoon column, SI.com's Jon Heyman claimed that starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka, currently on the disabled list with an elbow injury, was returning to Japan to possibly undergo an ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, better known to baseball fans as Tommy John surgery.

A day later, though, it appears Heyman may have gotten ahead of himself. Red Sox manager Terry Francona told the Providence Journal:

"He's not going to have surgery. He's not going to have Tommy John," Francona said after Monday's loss to the Indians. "Some reports aren't very professional. That's a shame. It's a shame that we have to do that."

Matsuzaka undergoing Tommy John isn't off the table?he'll get a second opinion in the next week, the report said?but it's clearly not what the Boston front office expects to happen.

The 30-year-old right-hander is in Japan, but he is there for "an unrelated personal matter," the Journal said.

Matsuzaka is off to a poor start this season, going 3-3 with a 5.30 ERA in eight games.
