• Add Coastal Carolina to the long list of small-conference programs that have taken down a school from the SEC West. Chad Gray scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half as the Big South favorites emerged with a 78-69 overtime victory over LSU, Coastal Carolina's first win over a BCS-conference opponent since an upset of South Carolina 17 seasons ago.
• An 0-for-18 three-point shooting performance in an ugly 51-45 victory over Cal Poly might seem as though it would be a disappointment for San Diego State, but consider who the Aztecs were without. Star Kawhi Leonard and fellow starter Chase Tapley both did not play as a result of a flu bad enough that both had needed IVs before San Diego State's previous game on Saturday night.
• The latest in a seemingly endless string of Josh Selby stories is that the highly touted Kansas freshman will initially come off the bench and play off the ball once he makes his debut on Saturday against USC. This is hypocritical since I'm as guilty as anyone of writing about Selby, but is anyone else tired of debating his potential impact and ready to see him finally play?
• UCLA may have whiffed on its chances for marquee victories so far this season, but the Bruins at least have proven they'd probably fare well in the Big West Conference. A closer-than-expected 74-67 win over UC Davis on Monday night was UCLA's fourth of the season over a Big West opponent.
• For a Big Ten team with legitimate NCAA tournament aspirations, Northwestern's non-conference schedule is a joke. The Wildcats clobbered Long Island 81-65 on Monday night to improve to 6-0 on the season, but three straight Big Ten games against Purdue, Michigan State and Illinois in a few weeks is going to be a shock to the system like stepping out of a sauna and into a blizzard.
• A slow start by Michigan State, Minnesota's unexpected home loss to Virginia and Purdue's offensive struggles without Robbie Hummel has caused Yahoo! Sports' Jason King to elevate the Big East over the Big Ten in his conference power rankings. The Big East deserves consideration, but ultimately it's probably still too close to call between those two conferences and the Big 12 right now.
• As if a three-game losing streak wasn't bad enough for Clemson, the Tigers lost leading scorer Demontez Stitt for a few weeks after he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. The good news is that outside of a road test at College of Charleston, there's not much beef on Clemson's schedule until they continue ACC play against Miami on Jan. 8.
• Arkansas State doesn't have too many basketball victories recently, but the school is proposing to forfeit a combined 27 of them from the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons in addition to forfeits in other sports as well. The proposed penalty is a result of inadvertently allowing an ineligible player to play.
