Many accomplished college basketball players go their entire careers without sinking a meaningful buzzer beater.
On Tuesday night, Hofstra's Charles Jenkins essentially sank two in the same game.
The Pride trailed William & Mary by three late in regulation when Jenkins caught an inbounds pass behind the top of the key, took advantage of a defender inexplicably sagging off him and buried a game-tying 25-footer with 2.7 seconds left. Jenkins then won it for Hofstra in overtime a few minutes later, pulling up from 35 feet and sinking a game-winning 3-pointer as time expired to give the Pride an 81-78 victory.
"I had four seconds to get up the court, which is a lifetime," Jenkins told the New York Daily News. "I got a good look at the basket and I made it."
Why William & Mary didn't do more to prevent Jenkins from taking those shots is a mystery considering his unmatched credentials. The senior All-American candidate had 28 points on 10-of-21 shooting Tuesday night and is averaging 23.3 points and shooting 53.3 percent from the field.
Hofstra's victory over William & Mary improved the Pride to 12-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association, good enough to clinch a bye in the opening round of the conference tournament.
Immediately after hitting his game-winner, Jenkins sprinted toward the other basket and did a Lambeau Leap into the yellow-clad student section. For Jenkins, it was the signature moment of what's already been a special senior season.
