VCU fans were championed for its street celebration when the Rams defeated Kansas to make the Final Four.
But after Saturday's 70-62 loss to Butler in the national semifinal, the scene in the streets of Richmond, Va., turned ugly as fans torched trash cans, newspaper boxes and tossed firecrackers into the crowd.
Here's the official news report from CBS6:
The "celebration" -- or riot, depending on your perspective -- was so out of control that police in riot gear were called in to try and defuse the situation. They threw cans of tear gas into the crowd while fans scattered while holding bandanas and surgical masks to their faces. One woman even came prepared with her own gas mask.
Thousands of people watched the VCU-Butler game from the school's arena and then filed out onto the street after the game concluded. Within minutes, the mayhem ensued.
The police weren't surprised by the chaos and had everyone on high alert for the possibility of celebrations getting out of hand after last week's festivities started to get a little rowdy.
However, VCU failed to reach West Virginia status as the town's couches remained intact. I think the best part of the video is that when police show up the crowd seems less interested in partying and more intent on taunting the police.
There were no reports of injuries.
