Zabian Dowdell to Phoenix Suns, First NBA D-League Call-Up of Season

The Phoenix Suns tried out four players for an open roster spot on Thursday, but eventually decided to go with the player the team was most familiar with prior to the workout.

Zabian Dowdell, a 6-foot-3 combo-guard out of Virginia Tech, has played for the Suns' Vegas Summer League team the past two seasons and was invited to training camp this year before earning Friday's D-League call-up. The call-up was first reported by ESPN's Marc Stein.

Though the Suns eventually chose to go with rookie Matt Janning as their third ball-handler during the preseason, the 26-year-old Dowdell (photo, with ball) told The Arizona Republic that he believed he could contribute to the Suns in all areas.

"I feel like I can do everything," Dowdell said prior to training camp. "I can run the team, score, get guys involved, play defense. When I get in the gym, I try to work on everything. Whatever they need me to do, I feel like I can do it. I feel like I can help the team and I'll do anything I can to show that."
