For schools like San Diego State and Brigham Young, Wednesday night's epic clash between Top 10 teams was glorious. Finally, with a skeptical nation doubting their collective Top 10 résumés, they'd have a chance to prove themselves with dozens of NBA scouts and national media crammed into BYU's Marriott Center. Yet, at the same time, the Aztecs (20-1 with a 5-1 MWC mark) and Cougars (20-1, 6-0) knew one team would lose -- possibly adding more doubt to its national reputation -- while the winner, too, might have its victory discounted by a chorus of "Yeah, buts" from those reluctant to believe a conference like the Mountain West could possibly have two Top 10 teams.
What happened, after Jimmer Fredette torched the nets for yet another 40-plus-point game in a 71-58 BYU win, might be quite the opposite.
It's one thing for media to gush from afar about a kid with a funky name with a penchant for scoring points by the bucket load. It's another for them to visit Provo and practically sign up for his fan club.
"You ever watched basketball with a smile?" wrote CBSSports.com basketball guru Gary Parrish. "That's what Fredette does to you -- unless, of course, he happens to be dropping ridiculous shots on your favorite team. In other words, unless your favorite team is San Diego State, you probably had a blast watching him play against San Diego State."
The 24 NBA scouts at the game were surely impressed, but so were the NBA players glued to their televisions -- assuming they could find the channel the MWC forces its teams to play on.
