Yu Darvish Becomes Highest-Paid Player in Japan, No Comment on Coming to MLB

Filed under:

With teams signing up ace pitchers to long-term deals earlier and earlier, the free agent landscape is awfully short on dynamic starters in the next few years.

That's part of what makes Yu Darvish so interesting. Just 24, Darvish is, by acclaim, the best pitcher in Japan who hasn't yet attempted to make his way to the United States. It will be at least one more year before he comes to our shores because Darvish has signed a one-year deal with the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters. According to Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker, the deal will pay him 500 million yen, or $6 million, and make him the highest-paid player in Japan this season.

So will this be the last year that Darvish spends on that side of the Pacific? It's too soon to say, because Darvish offered nothing but a no comment when asked if he'd attempt to put himself up for posting before the 2012 season.
