It turns out Jack Del Rio has a future in Jacksonville. But Jacksonville Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver, in announcing on Monday that he will retain Del Rio as the team's coach for a ninth season, made it clear that that future needs to look much different than the past. The immediate future.
"If we're not in the playoffs (in 2011), it's pretty apparent we'll have a different coach," Weaver told reporters Monday afternoon shortly after a press conference to announce that Del Rio will remain as head coach.
Del Rio, who has led the Jaguars to two post-season appearances in eight seasons, led the Jaguars to an 8-8 season this season. They had a chance to clinch their first AFC South title with a victory in Indianapolis in Week 15, but lost that game, 34-24, then lost their final two regular-season games.
"I think we've made real progress," Weaver said. "It would be a knee jerk, is the best way to put it, if I decided to start over with a new coach and a new staff."
While Del Rio has one season remaining on his contract, Weaver said he did not roll over the contracts of the coaches, meaning they will coach this season under one-year deals.
Weaver also on Monday expressed confidence in Jaguars' quarterback David Garrard, who has been inconsistent as a starter at times and whose job security has been called into question as much as that of Del Rio's in recent weeks and months.
"I believe that we can win with David," Weaver said. "He has to continue to do the things that we asked of him."
