Larry Burton (Syndicated Writer) Tragedy strikes the college football world again as another football player has passed away at far too young an age.
Today, Austin Box, projected as the starting middle linebacker for Oklahoma, was found unresponsive in the home of a friend. There is no official cause of death at this time, but the 911 call may provide a clue.
He was staying with T. J. Cobble, the son of his former high school coach and a friend of his, when Cobble called 911 and said, "There's a guy who stayed with me last night and he's not responding to me. He takes pain pills and he's not responding to me."
Pain killers were thought to be a factor in Aaron Douglas' death last week. Douglas was projected to fight for the left tackle spot on the Alabama offensive line.
Hospitals were unable to save or revive him.
"Austin Box will be greatly missed by his many friends and teammates in the athletics department and all across campus," athletic director Joe Castiglione said in a statement. "Grief counseling is being made available to members of the team and his close friends."
Box was plagued by injuries after redshirting in 2007 and was still dealing with a back injury, forcing him to be limited during spring practice.
Austin had just graduated but came back for his senior year hoping to start and finish his career strong. In 2010, he played in nine games, starting five after missing the early part of the season with those back issues.
No arrangements have been made as of yet. The family and the university will announce those arrangements once they have been finalized.
The prayers of all college football fans go out to the Box and OU families in this event. He was a talented football player and a great young man and will be missed by all who knew him.
