Mike Singletary Finds 49ers Can Still Meet Goal: Win Lowly NFC West

There's one thing that having a game Thursday will do for an NFL coach.

It will make what happened Sunday less important, even if the team is the San Francisco 49ers and even if the 49ers kept their playoff hopes alive with a 40-21 victory over NFC West co-leader Seattle.

San Francisco coach Mike Singletary said he's much more focused on getting his troops ready to fly to San Diego Wednesday for Thursday's game against the Chargers than he was in reflecting on the game that kept his team's post-season dream alive.

"You're just trying to make sure you have everything where it needs to be and making sure your players are in that mental state of mind,'' Singletary said, "and trying to figure out practice and figure out how to manage (injuries), and at the same time putting the game plan together.''

At 5-8, the 49ers are one game behind the Seahawks and Rams, which is the only way a 5-8 team can believe goals can still be achieved.

The 49ers' goals, as defined by Singletary, are straightforward.

"A successful season,'' the coach said in summing up what's left in 2010. "The vision is being good enough to take this team to winning the division. That's the vision.

"Sometimes we have a vision at the beginning of the season. It hasn't changed, but circumstances sometimes change -- and making sure the coaching staff understands this is still the vision. It's not going to change. Making sure the players understand, 'This is the vision and it's not going to change.' ''

San Francisco finds itself in pretty good shape, playoff-wise, if they can win out. The Chargers could be the biggest test with division foes St. Louis and Arizona -- two teams who like the 49ers are flawed -- on the schedule to finish up.

If the 49ers win out and make the playoffs, that may be enough to save Singletary's job, although there's no guarantee of that.
