Orlando Scandrick wasn't keeping stats during Sunday night's back-and-forth affair between Dallas and Philadelphia, but the Cowboys' cornerback knew how the visiting Eagles had rallied from behind to win 30-27 with 13 fourth quarter points."How many yards did DeSean Jackson have?" Scandrick asked reporters. "Was he over 200?"
Good figuring, Orlando. Jackson had 210 yards and a touchdown on just four catches, including a 60-yarder to open the game on a deep throw by Michael Vick while being covered by cornerback Terence Newman and 91 on a screen on which he outraced Scandrick to the end zone.
"What about LeSean McCoy?" Scandrick asked next "One (hundred and) fifty?"
Even better accuracy, Orlando. McCoy had 16 carries for 149 yards, 44 on three consecutive carries as the Dallas defense needed to make a stop to give the ball back to its offense in the waning minutes, a mission that wasn't accomplished.
The Cowboys (4-9), who clinched their first losing season since 2004, a year after winning their first playoff game since 1996, picked off the usually impeccable Vick twice (once by inside linebacker Bradie James and once by strong safety Gerald Sensabaugh), sacked him twice (once by Scandrick on a blindside blitz and once by nose tackle Jay Ratliff), hit him plenty and held him to just 16 yards on eight runs, but they couldn't keep Jackson and McCoy corralled.
"We contained them for the most part, but obviously for the most part isn't good enough," linebacker Keith Brooking said about the entire second-ranked Eagles' offense.
Missing the playoffs was a sure thing for Dallas after starting 1-7, a shocker that caused owner/general manager Jerry Jones to fire coach Wade Phillips and replace him with offensive coordinator Jason Garrett on an interim basis. But the actual reality of being done after Week 17 really hit home on Sunday night for Jones, who had crowed over the summer about having the first team to play the Super Bowl in its own stadium come February.
