Headlinin': Jon Embree's getting Colorado's old band back together

Getting the band back together
Making the morning rounds.

Never forget. Colorado couldn't convince Bill McCartney to return to the sideline, so it's going for the next best thing: A coaching staff composed overwhelmingly of former Buffaloes who played or coached under McCartney during the most successful run in school history in the late eighties and early nineties. Besides new head coach Jon Embree (an All-Big Eight tight end under McCartney in the mid-eighties) and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy (an All-American running back on the 1990 national championship team), the staff will retain assistants Darian Hagan (star quarterback for the '90 champs), and Brian Cabral, a former CU linebacker who joined McCartney's staff in 1989. It's also likely to bring back Greg Brown (a secondary coach from 1991-93, the first of three stints in Boulder) as defensive coordinator, as well as Embree's brother, Sean, who also played tight end at CU and coached under McCartney. Other candidates include Mike Hankwitz (McCartney's defensive coordinator from 1985-94) and Kanavis McGhee, a star defensive lineman on the national title team. [Boulder Daily Camera]

On a more somber note, Embree's arrival over the weekend was marred by the apparent suicide of Darian Hagan's 19-year-old son. [Denver Post]

At least he gets to keep the rings. As expected, Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis walked the plank Monday after the worst of his 15 seasons under Mack Brown, along with offensive line coach Mac McWhorter and defensive tackles coach Mike Tolleson – a trio that, between them, leaves Austin with a combined 112 years of coaching experience. The name at the top of the list to fill Davis' shoes: Running backs coach Major Applewhite, a UT fan favorite for more than a decade. [Austin American-Statesman, Dallas Morning News]

Feeling any inspiration? Elsewhere, Urban Meyer reiterates that his maligned offensive coordinator, Steve Addazio, isn't going anywhere if he has anything to say about it, though Meyer left a glimmer of hope for Gator fans yet: "I'll have further updates as we get closer to the bowl game." Godspeed. Senior punter Rob Long will miss Syracuse's Dec. 30 date with Kansas State in the Pin Stripe Bowl, his final college game, after being diagnosed with a benign brain tumor that will requite surgery. Long is expected to make a full recovery and promised via Twitter that nothing will keep him from traveling to New York City for the Orange's first bowl game since 2005. [Syracuse Athletics]

Deja vu. Maryland cornerback Dexter McDougle will miss the Terps' trip to the Military Bowl after suffering a broken clavicle in an on-campus scooter accident on Saturday. That makes him the second Maryland player sidelined by an on-campus scooter accident in less than two months, after offensive lineman Pete DeSouza broke both of his legs in a crash in October. [Washington Post]

The streets are safe again. Oregon State Police have arrested two men on felony theft charges for allegedly making off with ESPN's giant Lee Corso mascot head during College GameDay's visit for the Oregon-Oregon State game last weekend. The head was safely returned Monday after an OSU employee found it outside his house. [Eugene Register-Guard]

Quickly… Hyped JUCO quarterback Zach Mettenberger, a washout at Georgia following a pair of spring arrests, has committed to LSU. … Local prep star Teddy Bridgewater has backed out of his commitment to Miami, pending the hiring of a new head coach. … Clemson quarterback Kyle Parker will start in the Meineke Bowl, likely his last college game, despite a "rift" with coach Dabo Swinney. … Michigan players have Rich Rodriguez's back. … Jerry Kill tries to charm his way into the locals' hearts. … Observers were not impressed with the USC-UCLA game. … Rose Bowl-bound Gary Patterson admits he'd rather be in Glendale. … Washington's Holiday Bowl date with Nebraska is one of three Husky-Husker match-ups in less than a calendar year. … And Urban Meyer defends his betrayal of SEC solidarity in the Coaches' Poll.
