Cecil Newton was invited by the Heisman Trust to attend the ceremony -- which will take place Saturday night -- as is customary for all parents of finalists.
But with the clouds of controversy circling the man who has been found to have solicited money from Mississippi State in return for sending his son to play there, the elder Newton has decided to sit this one out.
He released a statement through his attorney with an explanation:
"For all of my fifty years of life, coupled with 25 years of marriage, I have made an exhausting attempt to be a good husband, father and generally a good person of integrity. The past 60 days have caused all that my family worked to accomplish to come into question.
"So that my son Cam Newton can receive all the honors and congratulations that he has worked so hard to accomplish without distraction, I have decided not to be in attendance at the ceremony as it will perhaps rob Cam and the event of a sacred moment."
Newton is one of four finalists for the Heisman Trophy, the most prestigious award given to collegiate athletes. The other finalists are LaMichael James of Oregon, Andrew Luck of Stanford and Kellen Moore of Boise State.
Newton is widely considered the front-runner for the award. He led the Auburn Tigers to a 13-0 record and an appearance in the BCS Championship game -- against Oregon on Jan. 10 in Glendale, Ariz. He also leads the nation in passer efficiency rating and is tied for second in rushing touchdowns. He's 10th in rushing yards and has thrown 28 touchdown passes against just six interceptions.
