Redskins Considering Change of Scenery For Training Camp

Almost a decade later, the smell still lingers. It wafted over from the rendering plants in Greeley, Col., to the football fields where the Denver Broncos conducted training camp practices at Northern Colorado University from 1982-2002. It was not a pleasant odor, but for Mike Shanahan, it was the smell of victories in the making.

During the eight seasons that followed their summers in Greeley, Shanahan's Broncos went 81-47 and won two Super Bowls. During Shanahan's six seasons after Denver moved its training camp to its headquarters in suburban Englewood, the Broncos were 57-39 with just one playoff victory. That pattern continued with the coach's 6-10 debut in Washington in 2010, a season that began with training camp at Redskins Park.

So naturally, Shanahan, who expressed a preference for holding training camp away from home when he took control of the Redskins 13 months ago, is looking to shift camp as soon as this summer to nearby George Mason University, a Redskins source said on Friday. It's 19 miles from Redskins Park to George Mason.

Mason's club football team has an artificial turf field, but there are several other grass fields on campus including the soccer stadium which has bleachers that can accommodate 5,000 fans. The university in Fairfax, Va. is more centrally located in the Washington area than the Redskins' complex in Ashburn, Va. where Fan Appreciation Day in August has caused massive traffic jams on the only road in and out of Redskins Park.
