David Beckham Assists Stranded Driver, Reminds Us of the Good in Sport

David Beckham Stops to Help Motorist, Gives Us All a Warm, Fuzzy Feeling

Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder David Beckham has a reputation around soccer as a fairly nice, likable guy, even if he is one of the most overpaid players on the face of the Earth.

But Becks confirmed his good-guy status on Wednesday after he stopped to help out a driver who was stranded in the middle of the road on his way home.

Photographer Paul Long and his two kids were stuck in the car in the middle of the road in the English town of Ware. Several drivers had driven past, but Becks stopped and asked how he could help.

Long told him he could use a push, and the former England international obliged.

It seems like we're getting more and more stories of athletes being selfish, petulant or inconsiderate of those who watch them, but every once in a while, a story like this comes along and gives us pause.

After all, Beckham didn't have to stop and help, but he did. Stories like this one, and the one from earlier this week about Wake Forest baseball coach Tom Walter giving one of his players a kidney, remind us that there is still good in sport, that athletes and coaches are, by and large, good people.

Sure, you get the occasional bad egg here and there, a petulant, selfish superstar, a defensive tackle who likes to step on people's shins, a player caught cheating on his wife.

But, for the most part, athletes are just trying to be decent people who happen to be incredibly good at sports.
