As Albert Pujols Talks Crumble, Cardinals Missing Big Picture

Albert PujolsSources indicate that Albert Pujols and the Cardinals have made no progress in negotiations on a new contract, as there have been no substantive conversations between the parties since the Cardinals made an offer a couple of weeks ago.

The Cardinals readily acknowledge that Pujols is the best player in the game and they acknowledge the market for the best players in the game, but they claim they just don't have the money to pay him. So, as of Monday morning, unless Pujols is willing to accept a hometown discount of monumental proportions, there will be no deal.

The Cardinals surely must have known for a while this was going to be their position, so any notion that they were going to be aggressive in their pursuit is somewhat disingenuous. We all thought they signed Matt Holliday to a seven-year, $120 million deal last January in order to convince Pujols that they were serious about winning, but instead it was to add a bat when Pujols left.
