Cardinals CEO 'Hopeful' of Albert Pujols Contract Extension

With Albert Pujols' self-imposed deadline for getting a contract extension done growing closer, Cardinals CEO Bill DeWitt is sounding some optimistic tones about the negotiations.

While DeWitt stopped well short of telling Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com that a deal was close, he did send some news that should make Cardinals fans worry a little bit less about the prospect of a future without the National League's best first baseman of today and, perhaps, of all-time. While Pujols has hinted that he won't sign a deal after reporting to spring training, DeWitt indicated that things might be a little less hard and fast.

"We've got time between now and then to get things done," DeWitt said. "I'm hopeful. But these are big deals, and we'll make every effort to get it accomplished. Spring training is a long period of time -- six weeks. Whether it's reporting date, or a week after, I don't view it as, 'If it's not done by this day, then ... ' I don't see a specific day."
